Honesty and integrity Confidence Inspire Others Commitment and Passion Good Communicator Decision Making Capabilities Accountability Delegation and Empowerment Creativity and Innovation Empathy Resilience Emotional Intelligence Humility Transparency Vision and Purpose.
Wow. It takes a lot to be a leader. Because of a lot of fancy words like that, many people don’t think of themselves as leaders?
*Who/What comes to mind when you think of someone who is a great leader? (Talk about “influencer”?)
*Who are some leaders in your life? Actual leaders you know? (school, church, family, sports, etc.)
OK. Lots of ideas, wise, gray beards, OLDER PERSON. Generally think of someone as a leader who is older than us.
*Did anyone think of someone as a leader who was younger than us?
*Are there any advantages to being young?
*Are there any disadvantages to being young?
*Who likes Fish Tacos?
Now there are plenty of disadvantages of being young that you recognized: Don’t have the resources older folks do, Sometimes people don’t listen to your opinion, don’t seem to have any influence over decisions. Maybe some don’t respect younger people or could possibly look down on them.
1 Timothy 4:12 NIV
12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
Explain all the stuff about Timothy needing to go to a church and “command, teach, lead” etc.
*I’m supposed to do all this? How am I supposed to do all this? I’m young.
“Set the example, don’t be the example.”
Anyone can “be an example” a bad example— “don’t be like that guy . . .”
But when you “set” an example you place it up high on a pedestal. You shine a spotlight on it and you say, doesn’t matter how old I am. You can look at my life: my speech, conduct, love faith, purity and it can be your guide. That’s what a leader is my young friends, a guide.
Show and Tell: Put the Big Stuff in First
*What’s the “Big Stuff” in life?
My speech, my actions, my love, my faith, my purity . . .
Can I introduce you to one more concept that may seem at odds with your “Show and Tell” theme?
Leaders put the “Big Stuff” in first.
